Last weekend, Jessica visited me. She's a girl from Taiwan I met on my one day tour of the Great Ocean Road.
Jessi arrived by train quite late on Friday night, so there wasn't much time to do anything other than give her a quick driving tour of the area. I showed her Cheltenham's not-so-beautiful inner ring roads, my former apartment in Fairview, and the views from Cleeve Hill. On the way home she saw Bishops Cleeve.
On Saturday morning the weather was a bit bad but we soldiered on. We started at Gloucester Docks where Jessi was able to see traditional English canal boats (narrow boats) and a working lock for the first time. Then we had a look round Gloucester Cathedral, an imposing 1000 year old building which is the last resting place of an English King. Nowadays of course it's rather more famous for being one of the main filming locations for the Harry Potter films.
In the afternoon we headed into the Cotswolds. The intention was to follow a route called 'The Romantic Road'. On the front cover of that tourist brochure is a couple motoring through the Cotswolds in a Morgan sports car, the classic English sporter made just up the road in Malvern. As we headed from Gloucester to Tewkesbury and on towards Bishops Cleeve I pointed out several of these cars to Jessi. It's not so unusual to see one or two on a summer's weekend, but in less than an hour I'd counted about 5. As we drove towards Winchcombe we were passed by a convoy of 10 or more of them... all of a sudden there were more Morgans on the road than all other makes combined! It turned out that there was an owners club meeting at the Prescott Hill Climb, so we went in and had a look. We watched some cars climb, and took some photos - good fun and a nice surprise.
After that we visited Winchcombe and a few Cotswold villages, and had a beer at Bourton On The Water. In the evening we went out for dinner.
On Sunday we just chilled around the farm. I think Jessi really enjoyed this, and I know my parents liked having her here. She rode the horse, had a walk round the fields, and got some nice photos.
All in all a lovely weekend.
